Iranian envoy to the UN: US unilateral actions violate UN Charter, endanger multilateralism

According to Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, unilateral US actions violate the UN Charter while endangering global multilateralism.

Iran (IMNA) - The remarks were delivered by Amir Saeed Iravani on Monday during a UN Security Council meeting on multilateralism.

"Multilateralism has been regarded as an accepted approach to addressing global challenges, and effective multilateralism… is essential for ensuring international peace and security," he explained.

The official, however, warned that misuse of the UN system and selective application of international law weaken the integrity and efficiency of multilateralism, posing a severe danger to international cooperation, peace, and security.

Iran's ambassador stated that the United States' unilateral actions violate the UN Charter, weaken the UN system, and endanger multilateralism. "In this context, the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA, re-imposition of illegal unilateral sanctions against Iran, coercion of other nations to take these illegal actions, and defiance of the International Court of Justice's order are striking examples," the ambassador of Iran said.

Iravani also cited a March 30 ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that found the US violated international law by allowing American courts to seize nearly $2 billion in assets from Iranian companies, and ordered Washington to pay compensation.

Iravani also brought up a judgment issued on March 30 by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which stated that the US had broken international law by allowing US courts to seize nearly $2 billion in assets from Iranian companies and mandated that Washington make restitution.
