Despite US sanctions, some EU countries still buy Iranian oil

Despite US sanctions that penalize governments and companies involved in energy commerce with Iran, three European Union (EU) nations bought oil from Iran in 2022.

Iran (IMNA) - According to Eurostat numbers published in a Sunday post by the IRNA news agency, the EU imported 4,181 metric tons (mt) of crude oil from Iran last year.

Romania, Poland, and Bulgaria were the EU's top importers of Iranian oil exports, according to Eurostat data, which showed that more than 4,000 mt of the shipments went to Romania.

The data revealed that Bulgaria has begun importing oil from Iran as the newest member of the EU after Washington placed sanctions on Tehran in 2018.

Bulgaria received 168 mt of oil from Iran in December and kept importing by getting an 83 mt supply in January of this year.

Although very small in amount, the EU's purchases of Iranian oil show that European states frequently disregard US sanctions against Iran in the midst of a worldwide energy crisis that has been made worse by the conflict in Ukraine.

Early in 2018, Washington imposed sanctions on Iran as a result of a previous US administration's decision to unilaterally exit a global agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
