Egypt to begin giving visas to Iranians visiting South Sinai

Egypt has relaxed visa rules for Iranians as part of a bigger package of tourist amenities and as political tensions between Tehran and Cairo have lessened as a result of a rapprochement between Iran and a regional bloc of Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia.

Iran (IMNA) - Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa, announced on Monday that Iranian travelers will be granted visas upon arrival if they travel to the country's South Sinai region through a recognized tourism agency.

Issa announced the step as part of expanded facilities for visitors from China, Iran, India, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, and the occupied Palestinian territories, as part of Egypt's attempts to strengthen its tourism sector.

The announcement was covered in a report published on the Al-Ahram newspaper's website.

Egypt has pondered severe visa limits on Iranian tourists for decades, mostly due to regional concerns affecting political relations between the two nations.

For a brief period in the early 2010s, visa requirements were relaxed for Iranians visiting Egypt due to political changes brought about by the Arab Spring.

After an agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume diplomatic relations after a seven-year hiatus, new tourism facilities for Iranians have been announced.

The accord has aided Iran and the region's Arab countries to heal their tense relations.
