Some researchers believe that dovecots are the masterpieces of Safavid architecture, and suppose that the first pigeon towers were built during the reign of Shah Abbas.

Isfahan (IMNA) - The sciences of Physics, mathematics, zoology, animal psychology, and meteorology were used in these buildings to create a harmonic beauty. These dovecots  can be considered as one of the neglected tourism attractions of Isfahan due to their great variety of their shapes and sizes, harmonious repetition, and their harmony with the nature and beauty of the surrounding areas.

The purposes behind constructing these semi-castle buildings were to taking the pigeons away from the farms to prevent damaging to the farms or hunting and eating their flesh and eggs. furthermore, major part of pigeon droppings was used to fertilizing agricultural lands, and a small amount of it was also used for tanning.
