74% of the Zayandeh Rood dam volume is empty!

Recently, the Ministry of Energy released a report on the situation of the Zayandeh-Rood dam which indicates that 74% of the dam is empty.

Isfahan (IMNA) - According to the information center of the Ministry of Energy and based on the released report, the situation of the Zayandeh-Rood is described as follow: Since late last year, the unprecedented drop in the country's rainfall, and consequently the reduction of water storage in the Zayadeh-Rood dam as an important source of drinking water for the cities of Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, and the nearby villages, have raised many concerns about the way of supplying the drinking water for these areas in summer.

The normal volume of the reservoir is about 1 billion and 239 million cubic meters. Currently, the water storage capacity behind the dam has been decreased to 318 million cubic meters that in comparison to the last year, has decrease by 15 %; practically, 74% of this dam is empty. This amount of storage is reported in a situation that the mentioned required annual drinking water supplied from the Zayandeh-Rood dam is about 400 million cubic meters.

About 130 million cubic meters of the current storage behind the dam is related to the minimum capacity utilization of the dam. This amount of water should remain behind the dam in order to provide the high-quality water and maintain the stability of the structure, and the rest then releases to the downstream. Also, the volumetric flow rate of water in the current year has decreased to 498 million cubic meters; that in comparison to the last year, has dropped 56%, and is far away from the last year's amount.
