Animal symbol of Isfahan in danger

In 2014, one of the environmental activists of Isfahan, Shahin Sepanta, offered the ovis orientalis isphahanica as the animal symbol of Isfahan.

Isfahan (IMNA) - Ovis orientalis isphahanica, which is known as the symbol of the historical city of Isfahan in all scientific assemblies of the world, is in the IUCN Red List categories of Vulnerable species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The habitat of this special subspecies is in Iran’s central plateau in the tumulose and submontane zones in Isfahan Province especially in the National Park and Qameshloo Wildlife Refuge, the National Park, Kolahqazi Wildlife Refuge, and Muteh Wildlife Refuge in north of Isfahan.

Excessive hunting (permitted or illegal) are among the most important factors that made Isfahan's ovis orientalis isphahanica to be identified as a vulnerable subspecies; according to the studies, excessive grazing of cattle, land seizures and land use change, military activities inside the region of Isfahan western bypass, and industrial towns located in the north and east of Qameshloo Wildlife Refuge are some of the most important threats to the habitat of this unique species.
