Isfahan (IMNA) _ “In ancient times, triumphal arch of the city entrances and gates has been one of the important characteristics of the cities,” Hamid Agha Sharifian Esfahani said. “These arches were always located at the entrance of the cities before the Safavid era. During the Safavafid dynasty, the city entrances and gates turned to be “garden-streets”, which was an attractive idea and it can be used today,” he added.
“Nowadays the city entrances have changed to boulevards and streets; actually, seeing traffics at the city entrances means that you are approaching the city. Unfortunately, this modern architecture disrupts the spatial order definition in the city and contradicts with the traditional architecture,” the researcher of Iranian architecture stated.
“Considering that the city entrances of Isfahan don’t illustrate any definite identity, it is better to run a design contest regarding city entrances in order to choose the best one,” Agha Sharifian suggested. “In the old days, cities were not integrated, few cities were created and the borders were also defined. Then green spaces and gardens were built between the cities, but nowadays, unfortunately, only streets and boulevards are built,” he added.
