Iranian reciter bags top prize in Malaysia Int'l Koran contest

Iran's Hamed Alizadeh was named the top winner in the recitation category at the 59th Malaysia's international Qur'an competition which came to a close with a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

In the ceremony, which was attended by high-ranking officials including Malaysia's king, the winners of different categories were named and awarded, reported IQNA.

Alizadeh, who scored 89.96 out of 100, was the top rank winner in the recitation category. The runner-up in this category was Hussein Tahir Shakir from Iraq while the third place went to Malaysia's representative Wan Fakh al-Razi bin Wan Muhammad.

The fourth and fifth places in this category were from Canada and Singapore respectively.

In the memorization of the entire Qur'an category, memorizers from Senegal, Malaysia and Qatar took the first to third places respectively.

In the women's section, the three top prizes went to memorizers from Nigeria, Palestine and Senegal.

In all, 91 Qur'an reciters and memorizers from 49 countries took part in the six-day Qur'anic event.

Winners of the top three ranks in the two categories, both in the men's and women's sections, received cash prizes ranging from 10,000 to 70,000 ringgits.

The motto of this year's competition was 'Islamic Brotherhood Based on Unity of Islamic Ummah'.

The international Qur'an contest is organized annually by the Malaysian government to promote the culture of Qur'an recitation and fostering the teachings of the Holy Book.
