Four Paleolithic periods identified in western Iran

After conducting operations to widen Kermanshah-Kurdistan freeway in west of Iran, four Paleolithic periods have been identified, the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) website reported.

RICHT Public Relations Office quoted head of the team of exploration Saman Heydari Gouran as saying that the second season of scientific archeological explorations in Ivan cave and rocky shelter in central Kermanshah was accomplished by a team from the Cambridge University under the supervision of the Archeology Research Institute and Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department of Kermanshah.

Archeological explorations were accomplished in Ivan cave and rocky shelter which has been exposed to the risk of destruction.

Ivan cave and the rocky shelter are located 35 kilometers from the city of Kermanshah along Kermanshah-Kamyaran road, Heydari Gouran said.

The research aims to identify the oldest human settlement in Kermanshah and Zagros Mountains and specification of the transition from the Middle to New Paleolithic era, he noted.
